My thoughts on last Sunday’s Big Game and everything that led up to it. One game, many thoughts.
My work is deeply rooted in California. I also operate on the micro level in LA, which is one of the reasons I took on debt in the first place. It’s all about supporting my community, amplifying its voice, and making both it and my momma proud. I’m making strides in both areas. Why do I bring this up? Because if you know me, you know I rep my city and state with pride! We’ve been making headlines since the start of 2025. Our Governor made headlines after calling for a special session to protect and uphold California values knowing we would be a target. We’ve faced a climate crisis with the fires, yet our people continue to show extraordinary resilience, time and time again. We’ve shown how we uplift one another when systems fail us, or when those most affected are excluded from aid, including those who it’s meant to be accessible to. Too often, we’ve seen how many are kept out, caught in a game where only those who know what song to dance to get through the systematic barriers. The GOP can’t seem to stop talking about California, and it’s only making us stronger. And let’s not forget, this past Sunday, CPT and Kendrick doubled down—they made it known to the world that we’re not going down quietly.
We’re not going out without a fight. That iconic moment when you could almost hear all the pearls being clutched… ‘The revolution ’bout to be televised. You picked the right time, but the wrong guy.’ That line lives rent-free in my head. I knew he was about to deliver, but I didn’t realize just how hard he was about to hit. This is the kind of energy that’s going to keep us moving. This is the force that’s going to ignite and inspire us.
The arts, the love, the people, the community, the unity—these are what make the movement. Without the movement, we are nothing. We are lost, and we’ve already begun to lose. The powers that be are working harder than ever to divide us, and in some cases, they’ve already succeeded. I see the ‘it’s 92% not my business’ comments on posts about immigration and mass deportations, and it saddens me. But it’s valid. I’m pissed at my own people, but that anger is slowly being washed away by the tears of parents crying out for their kids, by people turning against each other. Still, I’ve also been moved to tears by those who say, ‘We are with you.’ By teachers coming forward, publicly declaring they’ll defend our children, and standing firm against those turning our kids into targets.”
“The revolution is being televised” – Kendrick Lamar
January felt like an entire year. I was on the verge of tears when I realized December wasn’t following January 31st. I’m not sure how much more we-mainly I-can take, but we have to keep pushing. Like Kendrick reminded us with millions watching, ‘They not like us.‘ Even with the threat of a lawsuit, we still have to keep going, even when burnout feels inevitable. We have to work twice as hard to protect what’s right. To make sure they understand that we will not sit quietly as they tear this country apart. Sleep? That’s a privilege you had last year. Just like eggs.
Who would’ve thought eggs would be the reason our people would choose hate? Who would’ve thought eggs would be the reason why people would regret choosing hate?
Who would’ve thought Target would go from oasis to racist? Never thought Coca Cola would turn on its consumers as fast as it did, I mean these people get diabetes and they still can’t say no to a coca with their tacos or lonche. But you turned them in and now it’s you that’s going to get the early onset diabetes as your stocks plummet. Just ask Target.
January was heavy. Had me scared, worried, looking for the nearest exit. But where would I go? How would I get there? My passport is expired and things have gotten so crazy that they are asking US born citizens to return their green cards. Records show they never had one, but still they ask for it-make it make sense.
My son is pissed at McDonald’s. He doesn’t understand why they’d turn on their supporters. He’s in 3rd grade, but he already gets it, ‘Why would they turn on us? That’s bad business,‘ he says. He gets it, and he’s still learning how to read. What’s your excuse? Think fast, Mickey D’s, he’s ready to start a riot. It hurts him, but he’s made up his mind: no more of his favorite burger until you change your ways. I think he means business, he comes from a long line of genetic stubbornness and righteousness
“They tried to rig the game but you can’t fake influence” – Kendrick Lamar
Look I’m not picking sides or anything but Degrassi didn’t do much for me, but Kendrick? He just gave me hope. Not sure how, but he did. He might have given me an easier way to look at things, a much more simpler way. Less tragic, less painful.
You either: Got it or you didn’t – that says everything I need to know about you. If you tell me you didn’t watch it because you don’t like football, fine. But if you tell me you did but didn’t care much for the halftime show, that too tells me everything I need to know: You have poor taste in music and/or you didn’t get it. Either way, I don’t need that type of energy in my life. If you tell me you didn’t watch because your team wasn’t playing – you ain’t a fan. The Packers haven’t played in a while, and I still watch- because “football is life” (I know it’s not football pero futbol but it works). Meh, I don’t need that energy either.
There was so much to enjoy, even if your team wasn’t there. This game has been politicized since before it even started. Last Super Bowl, it was all about the brothers—who would win, Little Bro or Big Bro? I was team Jason. That was exciting, and yeah, Mama Kelce made it even more fun for the fans. But this year, it was all about: will the team that we know will go to the White House win, or the one we know won’t? Mahomes made his stance clear, even if he kept quiet about who he was voting for. But Brittany? She said all that needed to be said for both of them. Some call it karma; I just call it perfection. A game so well played… just wish Jason had that ring. I wanted him front and center, not the orange chief.
Ugh Snoop, your commercial had me cringing – I mean a hate campaign? When you did a minstrel show for the biggest group of haters ever? It’s not about us not supporting you, it’s about you getting so caught up with your bag that you easily compromised your values. That says a lot about you, and I don’t like what I see. Then Kanye…why? Why would they give someone so unstable that big of a platform, haha. Why even ask that, when we gave an even bigger platform to someone even more unstable than Ye last November.
Kendrick, thank you. I don’t think those pearls have been unclutched yet, and I’m here for it. Many cried about the lack of white dancers! Guess they forgot DEI isn’t a thing anymore. Thank you for upholding Black History Month. Thank you for representing California, for representing Compton, and for representing so many Black and Brown communities like it.
“If I’m gonna tell a real story, I’m gonna start with my name.” -Kendrick Lamar
At the end of the day, Kendrick showed us what real representation looks like: unapologetic, powerful, and true to his roots. It’s not just about the performance, it’s about the message. And that message? We’re here, we’re loud, and we’re proud. So let’s carry that energy with us, now and always. Much respect to the culture, the community, and to those who continue to pave the way for the next generation. Hope your left stroke goes viral!
